New to Pilates? Start at the Pilates Movement
The Pilates Movement offers personalized beginner Pilates sessions at its Upper East Side and Tarrytown studios.
If you are completely new to Pilates, you can begin without feeling intimidated. Our instructors provide personal attention, caring guidance, and a clear introduction to the method so you can build confidence as you learn.
The Pilates Movement is a classical Pilates studio with locations on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and in Tarrytown, New York. We believe movement should support more than physical fitness. Consistent Pilates practice can help you build strength, resilience, body awareness, and confidence at every stage of life.
Our instructors teach the classical Pilates method developed by Joseph H. Pilates. This method uses a complete system of exercises and apparatus to train the body with precision and control. Every session is shaped around the person doing the work rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.
We recommend that every beginner starts with private Pilates sessions. If you later transition into group classes, class sizes are capped at three students. This allows our instructors to watch your form, provide individual guidance, and maintain an experience that feels close to private instruction.

What Most Beginners Worry About
Every new client has questions or concerns before starting Pilates. Here is what we most often tell beginners.
“Will I be the oldest person in class?”
Probably not, and even if you are, it won’t matter here. The Pilates Movement serves clients ranging from their 20s through their 90s. We also developed a special class Pilates Mature Body Method® for students aged 60 and older with special emphasis on how the Pilates Method works on a mature body. This class adapts the traditional classical Pilates method to address the needs of the mature body while maintaining a safe and effective approach to movement.
“I’m not flexible or strong enough for Pilates.”
Pilates does not require you to arrive flexible or strong. Pilates helps you develop flexibility and strength.
Your first private session is built around the body you have today, not the body you think you need before you begin. Your instructor selects exercises that match your current abilities and helps you progress from there.
“I’ve never done Pilates. Won’t I feel out of place in a class?”
Most complete beginners start with private Pilates sessions for exactly this reason.
Your instructor explains the apparatus, exercises, and cues as you work together one-on-one. By the time you move into a group class, you will already understand the basic terminology, know what to expect, and feel more confident using the equipment.
“I have back pain. Can I still do Pilates?”
Many people with back pain can participate in Pilates after receiving appropriate medical clearance. The Pilates method emphasizes alignment, core support, and controlled movement. Our experienced instructors regularly work with clients managing ongoing conditions, including back pain.
“I am recovering from an injury. Is it safe for me to start Pilates?”
Pilates may be appropriate during or after injury recovery when your physician or physical therapist has cleared you to exercise. Many of our instructors specialize in working with clients recovering from an injury or dealing with chronic conditions. Physicians and physical therapists frequently recommend Pilates as a way to progress into more exercise after an injury. Private sessions let your instructor build around your recovery instead of pushing past it.
“I haven’t exercised in a long time. Will Pilates be too hard for me?
No. Beginner Pilates sessions are personalized to your current fitness level, needs, and goals. Your first private session moves at your pace. Many beginners who have not exercised in years find that Pilates is the first form of movement they genuinely enjoy and look forward to practicing.
Results that you can expect when you start Pilates
Your first Pilates session introduces you to controlled, intentional movement. You may leave feeling energized, more aware of your body, and better connected to how you move.
With continued practice, many beginners begin to notice improved posture, easier joint movement, greater stability, and increased confidence in their bodies.
Pilates is appropriate for people returning to exercise as well as active individuals who want to improve the way they move. Whether you are a beginner to exercise or simply a beginner to Pilates, our instructors create training that meets you at your current level.
Real changes in strength, posture, and movement develop through consistent practice. Your beginner sessions introduce you to the method and establish the foundation. Regular Pilates practice helps you build on that foundation and work toward meaningful, lasting results.
1. Improved Flexibility
Controlled stretching and full-range movement help improve flexibility over time. Your instructor guides you through exercises that gradually increase mobility without forcing your body beyond its current range.
2. A Stronger, More Balanced Body
Pilates strengthens the body as an integrated system rather than repeatedly favoring the muscles you already use most.
Most people develop some degree of imbalance from posture, daily habits, previous injuries, or favoring one side of the body. Pilates helps address these imbalances, which can support more efficient movement and reduce unnecessary tightness or strain.
3. Better Posture
Pilates strengthens the muscles that support alignment and posture.
A focus on spinal organization and core support helps many beginners reduce strain in the neck, shoulders, and back. As body awareness improves, clients often become more conscious of how they sit, stand, and move throughout the day.
4. Less Stress and Tension
Pilates combines controlled movement with focused breathing.
This breath-driven approach gives your nervous system and muscles an opportunity to slow down, concentrate, and release unnecessary tension.
5. Better Balance and Coordination
Pilates improves balance, coordination, and body awareness by asking the body to move with control and precision.
These skills matter at every age. They are especially important for clients completing post-rehabilitation exercise or training to remain strong and active after age 65.
The Pilates Movement Offers Beginner Pilates Sessions Built Around You
Many people picture Pilates as a crowded room of reformers with one instructor calling out the same cues to everyone. That is not what happens at The Pilates Movement.
Founder Jennifer Ruggiero opened The Pilates Movement on the Upper East Side in 2006 to teach the classical Pilates method developed by Joseph H. Pilates. The Tarrytown studio opened in 2023 with the same commitment to personalized instruction and thoughtful movement.
The Pilates Movement provides private and small-group sessions designed around each client’s goals. You may be active but new to Pilates, returning to exercise after time away, managing an ongoing condition, or working toward a specific goal. Beginners are not all the same, and their Pilates programs should not be the same.
Our instructors have training in specialties that include post-rehabilitation programming and Pilates for adults over 65. Whatever brings you through the door, you will work with a qualified instructor who meets you where you are and helps you move forward safely.

The beginner Level 1 Reformer class is currently available at The Pilates Movement’s Upper East Side studio in Manhattan.
Should Beginners Start With Pilates Classes or Private Sessions?
The Pilates Movement recommends that beginners start with private Pilates sessions.
Private instruction allows your teacher to assess how you move, introduce the apparatus, and select exercises based on your goals, fitness level, and movement history.
How can I start Pilates as a beginner on the Upper East Side?
The Pilates Movement offers private sessions and small group Pilates classes for beginners on the Upper East Side. We offer Reformer, Tower and Mat Pilates classes for beginners that are limited to 3 students only. Start by purchasing an introductory package of private sessions or group classes.

How Many Times a Week Should a Beginner Do Pilates?
The appropriate frequency depends on your goals and other physical activities.
Beginners who are not participating in another form of exercise may benefit from practicing Pilates two or three times per week. People who already exercise regularly in another discipline may still make meaningful progress with one Pilates session per week.
Consistency matters more than choosing the same schedule as someone else.
What Pilates Session Types Are Best for Beginners?
Private Pilates sessions are the best option for most beginners.
During a private session, your instructor decides which exercises and apparatus are most appropriate for your body. One-on-one instruction also provides more time for explanation, correction, and progression.
Beginners generally experience the fastest and most personalized progress in a private Pilates setting.
What Should I Look for in a Pilates Studio as a Beginner?
Look for experienced instructors who provide comprehensive, personalized attention.
Pilates teachers should have at least two years of teaching experience and comprehensive certification through a 600 hr + Pilates teacher-training program. They should also continue their education through workshops, mentorship, and advanced training.
Ask how much individual attention you will receive during your first sessions. Find out whether group classes are small enough for the instructor to watch your form and provide meaningful corrections.
Experienced teachers and attentive instruction matter more than elaborate equipment or a crowded class schedule.
How Soon Will a Beginner See Results From Pilates?
Many people notice an immediate difference in body awareness, energy, or movement after their first few sessions. More visible changes generally develop over several weeks of consistent practice.
Practicing Pilates two or three times per week may help you progress more quickly, but results depend on your starting point, goals, and consistency.
Joseph Pilates summarized the importance of regular practice with his well-known statement:
“In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body.”
Consistent practice produces meaningful results
How Should I Prepare for a Beginner Pilates Session?
Arrive approximately 10 minutes early and come with an open mind.
Avoid eating a large meal during the two hours before your session. Wear comfortable, form-fitting exercise clothing and grip socks. Tell your instructor about any current or previous injuries, surgeries, pain, or health concerns.
Stay hydrated, focus on learning rather than perfection, and be patient with yourself as you become familiar with the method.
What Should I Expect During a Beginner Pilates Session?
Your instructor will begin by asking about your goals, exercise experience, current injuries, and relevant medical history.
The instructor will then introduce exercises selected for your body and experience level. Many beginner exercises are performed while lying on your back, but your session may also include seated, kneeling, or standing work.
Your instructor will explain each exercise, observe your form, and adjust the session based on how your body responds.
Can I Start Pilates if I Have an Injury?
You may be able to begin Pilates after receiving clearance from your physician or physical therapist.
Private Pilates sessions provide the most appropriate starting point because the instructor can personalize the exercises around your recovery, limitations, and current abilities.
Always consult your physician or physical therapist before beginning a new exercise program.
